Cape Town - Pets are good company for many people, but the benefits can also be offset by an annoyance over a period of time.

A News24 user reported that a pet hamster ran on its wheel nearly 12 hours per day, forcing the family to move the pet to a more isolated location in the house.

"Update on hamster power: sometime today both wheels hit 99 999! The counters only accommodate five digits - you go little guy," the pet owner posted on Facebook.

News24 visited a pet shop in Cape Town and found that hamsters make popular pets because of their relatively low cost of ownership.

The nocturnal rodents are generally quiet animals, but will hiss or squeak when agitated or frightened. They are also known to grind their teeth when irritated.

They do, however, like to exercise.

A hamster was able to run on its 14cm wheel at a rate of 60 rotations per minute. This translates roughly into speed of 21.6km/h, but the animal was able to do this for short periods.

On YouTube, several hamster owners have posted video of their pets running in excess of 6km/h over a more extended period of time.

Despite the wheels, being generally made out of plastic parts, they are quiet, registering an average of 45dB, which is softer than a whisper.
