Cape Town – Authorities are currently addressing an oil spill that occurred in Richards Bay after an underground corroded pipeline burst.

According to a report on the SABC the pipeline belongs to one of South Africa’s huge petroleum conglomerates. The report failed to say which company owns the pipeline.

The oil began to spill out into the bay on Sunday and continues to spread.

The pipeline that was corroded has been unused for months.

Sea officials have been trying since the spill began to contain the oil but it is believed that the oil has moved out to sea.

According to Patrick Khomo, the Richards bay port manager the damage caused by the spill is currently being accessed. He argues that the city has issued all the required equipment needed to help reduce the spread of oil.

Equipment is currently being used to try and remove the oil from the bay areas.

The oil has moved out to sea and this posses a very real risk to humans and marine life.

South Durban Community Environmental Alliance has called for action against the company responsible for the pipeline.
