Rio de Janeiro - Heavy rains have caused flooding in Sao Paulo, snarling traffic throughout South America's largest city.

The storm broke on Friday afternoon, unleashing torrential rains that have flooded around a dozen spots throughout this megacity of 23 million inhabitants, complicating the evening commute for many.

Brazilian television networks broadcast images of people picking their way across flooded train tracks and showing cars up to their windows in brown waters.

Still, experts say the rains will do little to alleviate a severe drought that has plagued the city for months.

Brazil's industrial southeast is in the throes of the worst drought in around 80 years, with alarmingly low water levels in reservoirs that serve Sao Paulo and its neighbour to the north, Rio de Janeiro.
