Cape Town – Rare twin elephants have been born at the Pongola Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.

The twins were born to a 31-year-old elephant cow named Curve, and their gender has yet to be determined.

She has yet to allow anyone near the elephants, said the Park.

Scientific research suggests that there is less than a 1% chance of an elephant mom giving birth to twins, said the park.

There is also a very small chance of the twins surviving into adulthood.

The Pongola Game Reserve is a 7 200ha park and to date has not been a victim of poaching, said Donoven Gloy, the marketing manager.

The main reason for their success is the number of deterrent methods the reserve employs.

This includes daily border patrols, and the use of aerial patrols.

Pongola Game Reserve is a big-four game reserve in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The reserve is home to a number of lodges, the Mvubu River Lodge and Nkwazi Lake Lodge are fully catered lodges

There are a further five separate self-catering camps.
