Mbombela - Mpumalanga’s animal rehabilitation centre, Care for Wild Africa, is desperately in need of donations to take care of orphaned animals.

The centre, which is situated outside Mbombela, is the home of baby animals, including rhino and hippos, whose mothers were killed in poaching incidents at the Kruger National Park, especially the Skukuza area.

"The number of baby rhino being orphaned due to poaching is on the increase. The expense of taking care of these animals is huge," said the founder of the centre Petronel Nieuwoudt.

Nieuwoudt said there are 11 rhino orphans being reared at the centre.

She said the calves drink milk every day as they are not ready to be freed into bushes within the centre.

"A 140kg baby rhino will drink 14 litres of milk daily, as well as a cup of glucose and other fluids," said Nieuwoudt, who works with dedicated wildlife care givers committed to preservation of the wildlife.

She said some of the animals come to the centre with injuries that urgently need treatment, but don’t trust humans on their arrival.

"Sometimes the calves are injured and need treatment. Sometimes they have developed stomach ulcers from the stress of seeing their mothers butchered and then being left to fend for themselves.

"It is hard to work with the injured animals because they are also scared of people sometimes. The last humans they saw killed their mothers. They get stressed, just like horses, and if they have developed ulcers, that’s another problem to deal with," said Nieuwoudt.

The centre urges schools, clubs and organisations to raise funds to cover the feeding costs.

"People who wish to support this worthy cause can directly contribute funds to Midfeeds Nelspruit or contact the centre at 082 825 8735," said Nieuwoudt.

She said Midfeeds gives a discount on milk powder, charging the centre R731 instead of R813 for 15kg.
