Pietermaritzburg - Two high court judges on Thursday reduced a rhino poacher's 20-year jail sentence to 12 years on appeal.

Judges Rashid Vahed and Peter Olsen dismissed poacher Ngemfu Khoza's appeal against his conviction on two counts of possessing a rifle in the iMfolozi Game Reserve.

But he ruled that sentences imposed on each count should have been ordered to run concurrently, effectively reducing the jail time to 12 years.

During trial the court heard how the poachers cruelly wounded the rhino with gunshots and broke its spine to prevent it from escaping or attacking them, before hacking off its horns.
