Cape Town - A 'streetwise' Nguni bull has been rescued from a Cape Town highway off ramp, it was reported on Wednesday.

It was herded into a trailer and driven to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (SPCA) grounds by seven workers, The Cape Times reported.

The bull had evaded capture since Saturday, when it reportedly started grazing next to the R300 in Mitchells Plain without stepping into the road or interfering with cars.

"I think this bull is street smart," SPCA inspector-in-training Mark Levendal was quoted as telling the newspaper.

"He wanted to graze in greener pastures, but managed not to cause any havoc."

Levendal said herding animals often strayed from home to find better places to graze, since many of them came from informal settlements where there was little space to feed.

According to the newspaper, the bull would have to be claimed by its owner in the next 30 days, failing which it would be sterilised and put up for adoption.
