Bangkok - Explosive experts removed a World War II-era bomb from near a Thai village Saturday after residents found the device in a river, police said.

Villagers in the hamlet of Lang Suan in Chumphon province, 470km south of Bangkok, were dredging the river near a major rail route between Bangkok and southern Thailand when they found the unexploded 1000-pound (450-kilogram) bomb on Friday.

"The villagers immediately notified us and we coordinated with the army to bring in relevant explosive experts," said an officer at Chumphon Central Police.

The explosive experts disarmed the bomb, which was taken away to be studied on Saturday morning.

Thailand, an axis ally, was bombed by Allied forces during the war as the Japanese army used overland rail routes to supply both their Burma and Malaya campaigns.
