The UK’s first cloned dog is expecting her first litter.

The dachshund, Minnie Winnie, was conceived in a test tube in South Korea, in a procedure costing £60 00 (R1 million) four years ago.

It was after her owner, 34-year-old Rebecca Smith’s original dog, Winnie, died after being hit by a car.

The children’s author won a contest to have her best friend Winnie cloned in 2014.

Minnie Winnie is a spitting image of her namesake, right down to a kink in the tail.

According to The Sun, scientists reproduced the sausage dog’s DNA in a litter borne by a canine surrogate mum.

The pups, which are not clones, are due in February.

Rebecca confirmed to The Mirror that while an ultrasound revealed that Minnie Winnie is expecting at least two pups there could be more hidden behind her rib cage.

“Minnie Winnie is having cravings for human food, including tacos,” The Deccan Chronicle quotes Rebecca saying.

Rebecca is thrilled to know that the memory of her original dog, who died at age 15, lives on.

“Winnie was such an enormous part of my life and I felt lost without her. To know Winnie’s memory lives on is so comforting,” Rebecca told The Sun.
