Paris - Germany is leading the invention of sustainable technologies in Europe with almost half of the discoveries originating in the country, the European Patent Office and UN Environment Programme said on Tuesday.

The "number of inventions in sustainable technologies worldwide increased almost fivefold between 1995 and 2011" to 51 000 in Europe, said their report, which was released on the sidelines of global climate talks in Paris.

Germany alone registered 38 575 patents in this period while runner-up France registered 12 345.

Six countries accounted for more than 80% of the inventions, it said. The other four were Britain, Italy, Sweden and Spain.

Benoit Battistelli, president of the patent office, said new technologies are needed to fight climate change.

"The report shows that in combination with clear legislation and policies to promote climate-change mitigation technologies, the patent system can support research, development and innovation in this field as well as boosting trade and investment flows and the transfer of these new technologies to other regions," he said.
