New York - New York City's mayor is pushing building owners to update heating and power systems in order to help meet his goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050.

Democrat Bill de Blasio announced the new energy efficiency measures on Friday, which was Earth Day. He says the city has set bold goals as it takes on climate change.

The initiatives are intended to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the city's million-plus buildings.

The measures include requiring building owners to update heating systems within 10 years.

Building owners also will be asked to save energy through steps like sealing roof vents in elevator shafts and covering refrigerators in retail stores.

The city estimates the measures will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings by 2.7 million metric tons.
