Saving the planet, one #trashtag challenge at a time

A new challenge is going viral on social media, and this time it brings some good news for our environment and planet.

People around the world are taking part in the new online trend called the #trashtag challenge.

So forget about all the nonsensical tidepod or bidbox challenges, a positive one has now taken the spotlight.

The #trashtag challenge requires people to take a "before photo" of an area that needs some cleaning or maintenance, and an "after photo" when people have cleaned or helped maintain the area.

This is then posted online on various platforms - like Twitter, Instagram, Reddit and Facebook - not forgetting the hashtag to go along with it.

The challenge originated in 2015, according to UCO Gear – an outdoor innovation and manufacturing company – when a UCO "people ambassador" pitched the #trashtag idea to the team. The concept grew from there.

But the challenge only gained traction over the past few days when one man shared his #trashtag challenge photos earlier this month and urged other users to do the same. His images were quickly picked up by other users on social media, and so the challenge took flight.

It is not certain from where the image originated.

An overwhelming response was soon followed.

It was not only the usual plastic and clothing items that were collected, but one user also cleaned up discarded make-up items.
