WATCH: Astronauts snap breathtaking images of a volcanic eruption

2019-06-27 20:59

A volcanic eruption has been captured in a stunning image taken from space.

On the morning of June 22, astronauts shot photographs of Raikoke volcano erupting.

Unlike some of its active neighbours on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, Raikoke volcano on the Kuril Islands rarely erupts.

Captured from the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts shot the photograph of the volcanic plume in a narrow column and then spreading out in a part of the plume known as the umbrella region.
