WATCH: Take a look at the plastics of the future

2019-05-02 17:26

Instead of being wasted, the leftover lobster shells, containnig the so-called chitin, can be used for producing bioplastic, according to a London-based startup.

After being pulverised in a blender, the shells are being broken down further in various solutions to extract the chitin in order to create a bioplastics solution.

The material is claimed to be biodegradable as well as recyclable and is used to form 3D objects such as plant pots or plastic bags.

One London lobster chain with nine restaurants produces enough waster for 7.5 million plastic bags annually.

Globally, some 500 billion disposable plastic bags are used every year.
