WATCH: World's rarest ape - identified last year - is at risk of extinction

A billion-dollar hydroelectric scheme on the Indonesian island of Sumatra could threaten a critically endangered species of great ape.

Just 800 of the Tapulani orangutans exist in the wild, and the species was only identified in 2017, according to National Geographic.

Environmentalists say that the dam will be built in the centre of the habitat in the Batang Toru rainforest, flooding some parts of it and cutting off orangutans from interacting freely to breed.
