SATURDAY EDITION | The best advice and tips for lockdown

Saturday Edition 3

It’s the second day of lockdown and it feels almost impossible to think there is still nearly three weeks left to go.

It’s undoubtedly going to be a challenge to make it through these upcoming weeks while hunkering down. But humanity has always found innovative solutions to survive, adapt, and thrive as our surroundings change.

STAY INSPIRED

In this News24 Saturday Edition we reached out to South African celebrities, businesspeople, sports stars, and health care professionals to share some of the ways they plan to keep their mental health in check.

"Considering what we are about to go through, it is vital as a leader, to decide what story we are going to tell ourselves about this experience," says Terry Dearling, business coach and previous HR Director for Barloworld Equipment.

"The story you tell yourself, shapes your experience. These three weeks could be depressing, frustrating and leave bad memories. Or they could be an opportunity to build a new relationship with yourself, and possibly with those you might’ve neglected. We have a chance to start again."

Our cover star this week Thapelo Mokoena has some other great advice. He says: "Having your favourite snack is everything. That one spoil at least once a day, in small quantities, will keep you positive." Now that's a plan we can get behind. Click the link below for 21 more tips and advice.

FIND YOUR ESCAPE

Kingsley Holgate, South African explorer, humanitarian and author says now is the perfect time for him to carefully plan his next geographic and humanitarian expedition. "Africa maps, scribbled notes, and reference books will be spread out everywhere," he comments. Holgate is encouraging fellow South Africans to plot their next adventure with friends. "Be it to the Richtersveld, across the Kalahari, wildlife reserves, fishing, beaches, mountains and lakes. Plan and dream up a great journey - Africa will still be here."

Traveller24’s Gabi Zietsman found the perfect escape in the Koo and Keisie Valley near Montagu at Wolwehoek Private Reserve - a single-unit glamping experience where she was engulfed by tranquillity - with not a soul for miles. Watch the video of her escape and make a note for your next trip.

BE ENTERTAINED

#JohnCena singer, Sho Madjozi, is encouraging people to take the time to start a new project that you wouldn’t otherwise have the time for: "Start writing that book or learn a new skill like a new language or playing an instrument."

Finding a virtual escape during this challenging time can be just the thing to push you through to the end. It’s going to take some creativity and imagination and help from the streaming gods. Now that everyone is locked in and cinemas are closed, we decided to rope in our film critics to watch and review the latest TV shows, series, and online movies available.

Keep reminding yourself that you are staying at home to save the lives of your loved ones and fellow South Africans. Rest and stay calm, in the knowledge, that this too shall pass.
