The driver of a truck which allegedly caused a multi-vehicle pile-up and killed four people on the N12 East near Alberton is expected to make his first appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The driver, who was arrested on Wednesday, will face culpable homicide charges in relation to the deadly crash that took place in early morning traffic on Tuesday.

Two people were killed on the scene, and two others died later in hospital, after the truck smashed into almost 50 cars.

At least 16 other people were injured.

The driver has allegedly claimed his brakes failed, causing him to plough into the cars.

On Wednesday, Gauteng transport MEC Ismail Vadi added his voice to those calling for the truck's owners to be brought to book if this was found to be true.

Meanwhile, police captain Doniah Mothutsane said the investigation into the incident continued and statements were still being taken from witnesses.
