As a sole breadwinner for three children and an unemployed spouse, Sarah Motuku found herself on the receiving end of numerous bank loans and the trappings of seemingly never-ending debt.

With endless garnishee orders from debtors, the prospects of financial freedom seemed unattainable for Sarah. This was until she encountered Anglo American’s Financial Wellness Programme.

“As a mother, providing for your children is one of the most important things. Not being able to do this is demoralising,” shares Sarah.

To address the issue of indebtedness, Anglo American Platinum developed personalised debt relief programmes for its employees. The programmes enables employees to regain control of their finances and alleviate the negative impact that debt has on their lives.

Andile Sangqu, newly appointed Executive Head of Anglo American in South Africa explains, “As a group we’re committed to the well being of our people and are concerned about the devastating effects of excessive indebtedness. Furthermore, we believe we have a responsibility to help our people free themselves from debt and avoid the snares and consequences of irresponsible lenders altogether.”

“The financial wellness programme is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” exclaims Sarah. “For the first time in my life my salary is all mine. I’m able to provide for my household, support my parents, siblings and their children, and still have a surplus to spoil my kids and myself. I feel like I have been given a new lease on life and I’m so thankful.”

David Patlele has a similar story to share. As a father of five and bread winner for his family, pressure to provide for his family quickly became unmanageable for David as the needs of his family grew.

“It all started a few years ago with the purchase of my second car,” explains David. “It seemed like a great deal at the time but I soon found myself struggling with the repayments. That, and needing to pay for my children’s tertiary fees, led me to take out my first loan.”

Since the programme David has received much needed financial relief after 17 years of working at Anglo American Platinum. He was finally in a position to  able to continue with his building project and now has the pleasure of being the owner of a newly renovated home which stands proudly on a dusty road in Ga-Luka.

“Thanks to programme, I am proud to say that I am now debt free. I just finished building a home for my family. There is joy in my home, I’m a new man looking forward to retirement,” ends David.
