A 16-year-old boy was rescued from an angry mob that almost set him alight in Etwatwa, on the East Rand, Gauteng police said on Friday.

A group of about 14 people accused the boy of being a member of a gang that was allegedly terrorising the community of Etwatwa, said police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo.

The mob had allegedly assaulted him and tried to set him on fire on Thursday, he said.

"Police responded swiftly after receiving a call about the attack and managed to rescue the boy from the mob."

The victim was taken to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

The group of 14 was expected to appear in court soon on charges of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, and attempted murder.
