A teacher was robbed and stabbed in her classroom at Summit Primary in Hanover Park on Wednesday morning, the Western Cape education department has confirmed.

Education MEC Debbie Schafer's spokesperson, Jessica Shelver, said it was believed that an intruder had attacked the woman shortly after she entered her classroom at about 07:25.

"A man… robbed her of her wallet and stabbed her on the right hand side of her chest," she said.

"Another teacher helped her downstairs to the administration building and the school called emergency services."

The teacher, who had only been at the school for two weeks, received stitches and further medical care.

"[She] is traumatised. The school and the department will arrange counselling, as required," Shelver said.

The department's district office was working with the school to investigate the incident.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed the incident was being investigated.
