The truck driver responsible for the deaths of former Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane and his two bodyguards was sentenced to six years in prison by the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court, in Limpopo, on Friday.

Amukelani Rikhotso, 31, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide, driving under the influence, and failure to obey road traffic signs when he appeared in the court in April, Director of Public Prosecutions spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said.

Rikhotso received six years for each of three counts of culpable homicide, three years for driving under the influence, and two years for not obeying road signs. His drivers’ licence was suspended for six months and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Chabane, his driver and bodyguard, Lesiba Sekele, 38, and Lawrence Lentsoane, 37, were killed when they crashed into Rikhotso’s truck as he was making a U-turn on the N1 between Polokwane and Mokopane on 15 March 2015. He pleaded guilty on 11 April 2016.

Malabi-Dzhangi told News24 that the National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence.
