Sodwana Blues

It’s long been one of the world’s top 10 diving destinations and a preferred fishing spot for recreational anglers from across the globe. But Sodwana Bay locals now paint a dismal picture of unemployment, violent crime and growing discontent with the management of the wider iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Several diving outfits have gone under and the area is littered with properties for sale. What is threatening South Africa’s first proclaimed heritage site? Carte Blanche investigates.

Faroe Islands Whale Slaughter

Despite the international outcry, scores of pilot whales are still herded to shore and slaughtered by fishermen in the Danish-owned Faroe Islands every year. In recent weeks Free State-born Sea Shepherd volunteer and activist Rosie Kunneke was arrested there and detained while trying to prevent the traditional killing of the whales on the North Atlantic archipelago. Carte Blanche met up with her and boarded one of Sea Shepherd's controversial patrol vessels to obtain unprecedented footage of one of the season's hunts.

Imagine being on a critical deadline and opening your computer, only to find all your files locked. A message appears to tell you that paying up is the only way to free your files. The ransom? US$500. It’s a virus called CryptoLocker and it’s eating its way through South African computers and backup systems. Carte Blanche asks: who is behind the malicious infection and what should you do if you fall victim?
