Create your own cosmeceutical experience with this DIY skin peel recipe - complete with neutraliser. All it takes is a few household items and a little know-how.

What you'll need for your DIY skin peel

  • Eight aspirin tablets
  • The juice of half a lemon
  • A cup of warm water
  • One teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • A cotton ball or pad

Making and using the peel

Crush the aspirin into powder and mix in the lemon juice, a few drops at a time. Leave the mixture to stand for 10 minutes to allow it to foam and thicken. Wash your hands and then apply the mixture to your skin with your fingertips. Leave the peel on for five to 10 minutes.

Then stir the bicarbonate of soda into the cup of water. Dip the cotton ball or pad into the water and wipe over your face. This acts to neutralise the peel.

How it works

Salicylic acid (found in asprin) helps to clear the skin by removing blemishes and unclogging pores. It also helps to remove dead skin cells which lightens scarring and reduces wrinkles and fine lines. The citric acid in the lemon also has a gentle peeling effect on the skin which helps to remove old, dead skin cells.

Use this DIY skin peel with caution if you have sensitive skin. Don't apply it to cut or broken skin.
