An urgent application by the Economic Freedom Fighters to intervene in its leader Julius Malema's sequestration matter has been dismissed in the High Court in Pretoria.

Judge Gregory Wright found that the EFF's reasons for the lateness of its application had not been explained properly.

He dismissed the application with costs.

Advocate Vuyani Ngalwana, for the EFF, argued that it wanted to intervene because if Malema was sequestrated, it would have a political impact on the party in Parliament.

Wright asked why the EFF only wanted to intervene now when the matter had been going on since 2013.
