A man in his 20s burnt to death while his friend sustained serious injuries in a shack fire in Johannesburg at the weekend, emergency services said.

"This is one of 10 fire incidents ?reported over this cold front weekend in the City of Johannesburg, in both formal and informal residential areas. The most common causes of these fires were heating and lighting appliances, unattended heaters, stoves and candles," said spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

The 24-year-old man died in the early hours of Sunday morning when the shack he was sharing with his friend in Orange Farm, extension 2, caught fire after a two-plate electrical stove was left unattended.

"The friend, a 29-year-old male, sustained serious burns all over his body."

He was taken to hospital for treatment.
