Five people were arrested in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, on Sunday after residents reported their suspicions over a truck load of rice and sugar beans to police, spokesperson Constable Lucky Matome said.

''Vigilant and concerned'' members of the community of Vogelstruisfontein told police about the haul, and a hijacking task team and other vehicles set off to investigate.

They found two trucks with trailers, 60 tons of rice and sugar beans, and 14 different registration plates.

One of the plates was believed to have been used in Durban, where the goods were stolen.

The five are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrate's Court soon.

Matome passed on West Rand Cluster Commander Major General Anna Mateisi's praises for the community, and for the task team led by Brigadier Manamela.
