The Hawks have taken over the investigation into the murder of an Amazimtoti detective who was shot and killed on Monday.

The man, who has not yet been named, was off-duty at the time of the shooting and had been driving on the R603 Umbumbulu Road, south of Durban.

The detective’s car was riddled with bullets and was found overturned at the roadside in the early afternoon.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed that officers were investigating the slaying.

"Apparently the member was off duty and he was driving along the R603 Umbumbulu Road when he was attacked by unknown suspects," he said.

"They fired shots at the vehicle and caused it to capsize. The officer died at the scene."

Mhlongo said that no arrests had yet been made and that the motive for the killing was not yet known.
