Israeli rabbi wanted on rape charges arrested in Joburg after 4 years on the run

An Israeli rabbi, wanted for alleged sex offences back in his country - including rape - has been arrested in Sandton, Johannesburg, the Hawks said on Friday.

Eliezer Berland was arrested on Thursday, spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

"We have been looking for him for some time."

A warrant for his arrest was issued by Interpol.

Berland had been on the run since 2012.

He is accused of sexually harassing or raping female followers in Israel.

Mulaudzi said Berland was sick and was currently in hospital under police guard.
