A 35-year-old taxi driver was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed a passenger during an argument in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

The man handed himself over to the police on Wednesday, said police spokesperson Xoli Mbele.

Mbele said the taxi driver allegedly shot the passenger once in the upper body with a licensed firearm and then ran away.

The victim was declared dead on the scene. He said preliminary investigations led officers to the owner of the vehicle who assisted them with information about the driver.

A firearm was recovered from the suspect, he said.

The man was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
