This novel collection by first-time author Perfect Hlongwane offers a biting portrait of inner-city Jo’burg, ‘a place where dreams come to die’

This is an in-depth review of how the city of Johannesburg was like in yesteryear, particularly in the 1980s and 90s. Those were the times when the city of gold was seen as a promised land by mostly those from rural parts of the country seeking better economic conditions.

This novel is more like a history book relaying both the bad and the good of those times – when Hilbrow and Yeoville counted amongst the leafiest suburbs of yesteryear. The two former entertainment hubs, which once homed the best pubs and clubs of yesteryear are now regarded as the criminal and drug paradise of Jozi.
