A KwaZulu-Natal Grade 12 pupil, who was raped while on her way to her first matric exam, went and wrote the paper after the ordeal.

KZN Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana, said the pupil from Banqobile High School in Pietermaritzburg reported the attack at a local police station before going to school to write her English paper on Wednesday morning.

The perpetrators stole her ID, a timetable, books, and other valuables.

Matriculants began their 2016 final exams on Wednesday.

Dlungwana said the school principal, teachers and pupils were still in shock following the rape. A team of professionals had been sent to provide counselling to the victim.

“This is an exceptional case that requires our urgent attention as the department."

The department said it would ask Umalusi to ensure she could continue writing her exams, although her ID had been stolen.

“We must not rest until those involved are brought to book. Importantly, let us unite and cushion our learners against any form of abuse and social ills during this period,” Dlungwana said.
