The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, today met with Lesotho nationals residing in Rustenburg, North West Province, to urge Lesotho nationals to use the next few weeks to apply for the Lesotho Special Permit (LSP).

September is the last month for undocumented Basotho – who have been in South Africa before 30 September 2015 – to regularize their stay in South Africa. In June this year, the Department of Home Affairs announced a three-month extension following a request by the Lesotho authorities to extend the closing date for applications to allow more time for Basotho nationals to apply.

The special dispensation is for Lesotho nationals who are working, studying or running businesses in the Republic of South Africa. The Lesotho Government has deployed staff at various centres to facilitate birth certificates and ID card enrolment.

The Minister also announced a new special provision that allows Basotho to apply for the LSP, through the VFS Global-operated application centres, without passports The applicants will have until the end of December 2016 to present their valid passports.
