ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has advised expelled Cosatu secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi, and former NUM boss Frans Baleni to vacate their positions while they were still widely respected.

Vavi was sacked by Cosatu following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a junior staffer two years ago. He was also accused by the party of making public speeches, without mandate from organisation, against the ANC and President Jacob Zuma.

Mantashe was speaking to SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union delegates in Kempton Park, on the East Rand.

Mantashe, in what some believed was a direct reflection on both’s former secretaries’ tenures in their respective former positions, said:” "If you have not done anything in 10 years, it means you can't do it.”

Vavi is said to still aspire to return to his former position, while Baleni lost his attempt for a third term in office to David Sipunzi.
