An Ekhurhuleni metro police officer and his mother have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a truck hijacking in Mpumulanga, the department said on Sunday.

"Our own official and his mother have been arrested for possession of the stolen vehicle," said EMPD spokesperson Clifford Shongwe.

On Friday, a tracking company traced the eight-ton truck – which had been hijacked the day before – to the Eastvale, Springs home of the EMPD officer and his mother, who is a prison warder.

The truck, which had been transporting flour, was found in the yard of their home. Its stock was missing.

Shongwe said the EMPD official claimed to know nothing about the truck, alleging that his mother's boyfriend had brought it to their home.

The boyfriend was, however, "nowhere to be found".

The official and his mother were subsequently arrested and will appear in court on Monday.

The driver of the truck remains in intensive care in hospital after he was hit over the head with a hammer in the hijacking.

Shongwe said the driver had alleged that he was attacked by four men travelling in a vehicle marked with EMPD identification.
