A 53-year-old Mpumalanga man accused of raping an 11-year-old girl, and giving her R10 to keep quiet about it, has been remanded in custody.

Elukwatini police spokesperson Sergeant Peace Mbokane said reports revealed that the girl was on her way to play with friends when she was raped.

He said the suspect, who cannot be named because he has not yet been asked to plead, had beckoned her into his yard and manhandled her into his room, where he forced himself on her.

"After the incident, the victim didn’t want to report details of the incident to her parents. Since the trauma was evident, they took her to the police who then sent her to hospital for medical examinations, where doctors confirmed that the child had been deflowered," said Mbokane on Wednesday.

Mbokane said it was only then, when the child could further elaborate that the suspect had given her a R10 note to buy her silence, that he was arrested."The suspect then confessed to the evil deed after he realised that the medical findings were going to give a landslide victory to the investigation," he added.

The accused first appeared before the Eerstehoek Magistrate's Court on July 15 and his matter was postponed to July 27 for his bail application.

The court postponed the bail application to Thursday.
