Here are some tips from Shelagh Foster, author of Your First Year of Work: A Survival Guide, to get you to that job interview, through that job interview and, even better, get you that job. All together, the tips Foster provides spell out I-N-T-E-R-V-I-E-W. Tick them off in your head in your next interview to be sure you’re shining.

I – Take the Initiative

Initiative is the art of making things happen, rather than waiting for them to happen. Here’s how you can apply initiative to a job interview and the job itself:

  • Make sure you have the right documentation with you.
  • Research the company in advance so you can ask intelligent questions.
  • Know the name and position of the person interviewing you, so that you understand their role in the company.
  • If you feel that you don’t have a skill that they are asking you about, be honest and then tell them about something else that you can contribute instead.
  • Don’t be afraid to share relevant thoughts and ideas.
  • If there is anything you don’t understand, ask. Ignorance is not bliss.
