Twenty six years ago today, on 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela was freed from prison after serving a 27-year jail term…

Nelson Mandela has been hailed as the father of our rainbow nation.

He was our country's first black president and one of history's the greatest leaders and statesmen.

Despite having sacrificed 27 years of freedom, Madiba emerged from prison without bitterness and continued to fight for the freedom of all South Africans. He has been hailed as an icon of reconciliation and forgiveness.

After his death on 5 December 2013, Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, "He's going to be remembered as an icon of reconciliation and forgiveness, a person of very considerable magnanimity."
