NW man arrested with gold worth R50m

A man was arrested in Springs with unwrought gold with an estimated street value of R50m hidden in his car, the Hawks in North West said on Tuesday.

The gold was allegedly concealed in the engine compartment of a silver Audi A6 the 31-year-old was driving, Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said.

He was arrested on Monday evening. This after Hawks members received information of a vehicle which was being used to smuggle gold from the North West to Gauteng.

According to the website goldprice.org, gold currently costs around R641 000/kg, which meant he would have had about 78kg.

He would appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.National Hawks Head, Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza said the arrest was linked to investigations into syndicates."A few weeks ago, we shut down a drug lab in Johannesburg. Last week alone we cracked more than three syndicates around the country,” Ntlemeza said.
