What was to be an easy way out of a life sentence for a Pretoria inmate turned into death.

This after he was shot dead after escaping from Losperfontein Prison in Brits in the North West. Floyd Mabena, 41, believed to be from Mamelodi East, was serving time for murder, two robberies and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, according to the police.

Police said Mabena allegedly launched his escape bid by threatening two prison warders with a knife and toy gun, tied their hands and robbed them of a cell key at around 07:00 am on Sunday.

He then allegedly undressed a male warder, wore his uniform, unlocked the high security door and escaped.
