Prisoner gives birth to 'Survivor' in police cells

It was drama and jubilation at Milnerton police station on Thursday when a prisoner gave birth to a child in the cells.

The South African Police Service said there was crying coming from a cell on Thursday morning and Captain Helena Acker, administration clerk Chrissie Geswindt and clerk Maggie Kakora rushed to the where the woman was.

“In the cells they found a 37-year-old female prisoner who had given birth to a baby boy. The baby was lying on a blanket,” police said.

Warrant Officer Daphne O’Reilly gave the baby a bath and covered him in warm clothing and a blanket.

The mother and her child were rushed to Somerset Hospital.

The mother of the baby told police that she had no idea she was pregnant.

The woman had been arrested for possession of drugs on Wednesday and was supposed to appear in court on Friday.

Members of the police named the baby Phumelelo which means “Survivor”.
