A group of pupils at Gerrit Maritz High School in Pretoria have been taken to hospital after they were stung by bees, paramedics said on Friday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said about 30 pupils were injured when they were stung by the bees.

"When paramedics arrived at the school they found that numerous children had been stung by a swarm of bees. It is believed that mechanics had been working on the school floodlights when the bees were apparently disturbed," said Meiring.

"A triage area was set up by paramedics on the scene. Fortunately, no serious or fatal injuries were reported at the time."

A number of the children were transported to hospital privately prior to the arrival of paramedics. Others were transported by paramedics to various hospitals in the area, he said.
