Seven suspects have been arrested in the West Rand in connection with the deaths of two people who were set alight in Tshepisong on Saturday.

The suspects, who are between the ages of 22 and 26, were arrested on Monday on charges of murder, rape, reckless and negligent driving by police detectives with the assistance of community members in the area.

On Saturday a man was knocked down by a minibus taxi while walking home with a woman in the early hours of the morning, said police spokesperson Constable Lucky Matome.

Matome said the driver of the taxi had initially driven off but was later brought back to the scene by community members who had witnessed the incident.

After an argument ensued between the driver and the friends of the injured man, the driver promised to rush the victim to the nearest hospital. They were accompanied by the woman who was with the man when the incident happened.

Matome said the driver allegedly drove them to a different location where the two - the injured man and his companion - were set alight. The woman died on Sunday and the man died on Monday afternoon.

The seven will be appearing at the Kagiso Magistrate Court soon.

Matome asked community members with information on the case to come forward.

"We still need more information as the investigation continues and we'd like to appeal to members of the community to assist the police if they have any information," said Matome.
