Stop shack fires

1. Fires spread quickly in informal settlements if shacks are built too close together. Make sure there is 1.5m (about six adult steps) between your home and neighbouring shacks.

2. Make sure there are at least two doors or windows so you can easily escape in case of fire.

3. Do not store lots of paper, plastic or cardboard boxes in your shack.

4. Keep curtains, clothing and bedding far from sources of heat because they burn easily. Also keep spray cans away from flames because they can explode and cause serious burns.
