A shop manager is lucky to be alive after being shot in the face during a robbery in Ulundi, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday night.

A source with knowledge of the investigation, who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity, said the victim was the manager of the Ulundi Spar.

"What we have gathered so far is that the suspects were waiting for the manager to return to his home after closing up for the evening," the source said.

"What we think happened was that he was abducted by the group and then taken to the store to reopen it while under duress."

"He opened the shop and they proceeded to loot it. At this point the man was shot in the face. He is very lucky to be alive with the bullet entering near his eye and exiting near his ear. He is still able to talk," the source added.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the men had also stolen a bakkie from the shop.

"The vehicle was later found abandoned under a nearby railway bridge," she said.

"The victim sustained [a gunshot wound] on the cheek and was taken to hospital for medical attention. Charges of attempted murder and theft of motor vehicle were opened at Ulundi police station."

The suspects remain at large.
