A suspect was arrested in King Williams Town on Thursday in connection with the triple murder of an elderly woman and her two grandchildren who were beaten and burnt to death in their Willowvale home two days ago.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said investigations indicate that 70-year-old Nothamalazi Hongwana was killed by a robber wanting to steal her pension.

Police initially opened an inquest docket after Hongwana and her grandchildren Ayisha Rwane, 9, and Ayabulela Xhongwana, 11, were found dead after the blaze ripped through their home in Nqadu Village early on Tuesday morning.

Neighbours saw flames coming from the pensioner's homestead and tried to help in vain. The family's burnt bodies were discovered later.

Manatha said following investigations it was found that the occupants had been assaulted before the house had been set alight.

A 27-year-old man was arrested this afternoon after the family's domestic worker pointed him out to police.

"The attacker had initially not been aware that she was in the house at the time. After setting it alight he found her and dragged her to a nearby bush where he raped her,” Manatha said.

The 32-year-old woman later managed to escape.

The suspect is expected in the Willowvale Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of murder, arson and rape.
