The independent Police Investigative Directorate is probing a case of murder after a teenage detainee was killed in the Beaufort West police holding cells, authorities have confirmed.

The bloody body of Gerdo Karelse, 18, was found early on Monday morning during cell inspections.

He had spent the night behind bars after being arrested for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.

Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said an autopsy will be performed to determine Karelse’s cause of death.

He had sustained multiple facial wounds.

Pojie confirmed he was aware of reports that Karelse was found naked behind a cell door, his lips had been missing and that teeth had lay scattered around him. He said he was unable to comment on this as Karelse’s death was still being investigated.

Zuko Mqungquthu, 29, who had been sharing Karelse’s cell was charged with his murder and appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He was remanded in custody until his bail application scheduled for July 5.

At the time of the incident, he was being detained on a charge of domestic violence.

An internal investigation into the incident has also been instituted, Pojie said.
