As a child, how did your spend Christmas Day?

You’re taking me way back! I grew up on a farm in the village of Hakboslaagte near Lichtenburg and we would celebrated Christmas in our new clothes, lighting steelwool so that it would make sparkles. We sat around the fire with our “sparkles” while my grandfather told us stories. We’d also help my parents kill and skin chickens. While my mother cooked, we’d dance to music by Brenda Fassie and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse. I have good memories. It was a time of happiness and peace, and I was surrounded by fresh air and family.

Did you receive any gifts as a child?

No, we couldn’t afford it. But I always wished for a guitar and at other times I wished to be loved more.
