Two sisters were stabbed to death and three others sustained multiple stab wounds during a house robbery in the early hours of Wednesday morning, police said.

Captain Ilze Jones said one of the women arrived at the house on Main Street in Garsfontein in Pretoria, where she was confronted by a knife-wielding man outside who forced her into the house.

"She arrived at around 20:00 on Tuesday evening, but the rest of the people were already held up by three men," Jones said.

Police were only called to the scene at midnight on Wednesday evening.

Jones said the three men had stabbed the two sisters to death and left a 59-year-old man, who is believed to be the owner of the house, in a critical condition.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said, when paramedics arrived at the scene around 00:46 on Wednesday morning, they found that the people had been tied up, assaulted and stabbed.

Botha said one other woman had been seriously injured, while a fourth woman had sustained moderate injuries.

They were taken to hospital.

The robbers fled the scene with two televisions and one vehicle that was later recovered in Yeoville, Johannesburg.

No arrests had been made.
