¦ 750ml (3 cups) water

¦ 250ml (1 cup) finely shredded cabbage

¦ 500ml (2 cups) finely shredded spinach

¦ 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced

¦ 1 bunch spring onions, finely chopped

¦ 5ml (1 teaspoon) aromat

¦ salt and pepper to taste

¦ 170g (1 cup) maize-rice

¦ 180g (1½ cups) mielie meal

¦ 65g butter or margarine


Pour water into a large saucepan and bring to boil. Add cabbage, spinach, potatoes, spring onions, aromat, salt and pepper, toss with a fork to mix and simmer for 15 minutes.

Add maize-rice and mix thoroughly. Add mielie meal. Using a wooden spoon, stir until mixture is stiff and crumbly.

Add butter, mix throughly. Turn heat down and cook gently for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

This dish is best eaten on the same day that it’s made.
