A man said to be one of President Jacob Zuma's bodyguards was injured in a head-on collision near Umhlanga on Tuesday evening, paramedics said.

A 24-year-old man, who was in a presidential security car, sustained moderate injuries. A woman in her late 20s was driving the other car, Crisis Medical said in a statement.

Both of them were taken to hospital.

The security car, with four occupants, was travelling on the M4 northbound around 18:40 when it crashed into the woman's car.

Crisis Medical said it was unclear what caused the collision.

Presidency spokesperson Bongani Mgqulunga confirmed that one of Jacob Zuma's protectors had been involved in the collision, but said he had not been fully briefed on the details of the accident.

Zuma was not involved in the collision.
